Chapter 6

Angie hung onto Madu's every word he said, as he slowly led her through the massive house. As he had promised, he kept every hungry male at bay. Even though the majority of them steered clear of the two because he was with her, there were those brave men that tried to latch on to the tour. After a few chosen words spoken crisply in their language, they gave up without another try. In spite of the man's age, he ruled the household with an iron fist. He commanded respect, and everyone gave it to him. He possessed an old world charm that just wasn't seen in the current generation, but spoke of English gentry of times’ past.

From the expensive artwork that decorated the walls of the home, to the hand painted Persian rugs, to the imported wooden flooring, to the crown molding, to the history of the house, he dazzled her with his knowledge.

“Watch your step,” he warned as he reached in the door, flicked on the lights, and moved back to allow her to walk before him down the stairs that went to the underground wine cellar. It wasn't until he had pulled out a couple of bottles of wine, did he reveal his true motives behind taking her into the musty room.

“Fannie's very upset over the fact that you haven't called her to inform her of the attack on your life.”

“You... you're the inside contact. I would never have guessed it was you.”

“I know. I'm the one person that everyone over looks. I'm the glorified servant,” he whispered. “Let me show you the other use of this cellar,” he suggested, as he beckoned her with a wave of his slightly wrinkled hand. Around the corner of the bedrock that had been carved out of the earth to create the room, was a glass-encased cigar room. Walnut colored shelves lined three walls with the space. Two high-back leather chairs sat in the middle of the cigar room, with one long ottoman.

“I know you can't drink, but you don't mind if I have a glass?” he questioned.

She turned to find him walking toward her with a large burgundy wine glass in one hand and a dusty bottle in the other.

“If you're drinking red wine, I'll have a small sip.”

Madu paused and tilted his head. “I did read that somewhere... about pregnant women, and red wine being good for the baby.”

Angie waited for him to scoop up another glass. She stood to the side as he typed in the numeric code on the keypad that opened the sealed room that housed high-priced smokes. Once again, he allowed her to go first before he followed, closing the door behind them.

“This room has its own air system. It's also soundproof for the most case. I didn't want someone to come down here and hear us talking,” he explained while he fell back into one of the chairs.

She could see why this man had survived in her father's household. He was a silent threat that no one was even aware was hiding in plain sight.
